The Carl Kroening Interpretive Center sits surround by prairie and woodlands overlooking the Mississippi River. Inside, wander through an exhibit exploring the Mississippi River where you'll discover the dangers of logging, "drive" a ’73 Barracuda, "visit" the Webber Baths and find out what happened to local clay. The Center also features a unique found-object mural and displays of live amphibians and reptiles. Borrow binoculars to watch the birds from inside comfort. Young visitors can dress-up like loggers, hold a farmers market, build with "clay" bricks, discover if they are larger than a Great Blue Heron, and explore the touch-and-see area.

A variety of free resources are also available to visitors. Borrow backpacks full of fun activities and information for exploring insects, trees, the river, or birds. Trail activity guides—available in English, Spanish and Hmong—turn investigating the prairie, forest and creek into family fun. Or borrow a book from our lending library. The professional naturalists at the Kroening Interpretive Center offer a wide variety of outdoor and environmental educational experiences. Choose from popular program topics such as birds, insects, amphibians and reptiles, water quality, and the Mississippi River. Naturalists can also customize a program to meet the interests of your group.

These interactive programs frequently incorporate math, language or art activities. Young students use their senses to explore the park—acting like squirrels, discovering what lives in a pond, etc. Older students engage in scientific experimentation: measuring water quality, calculating the age of trees, classifying fish, etc. Pre- or post-visit material is available for many programs.

Programs are generally two hours in length and cost depends on the number of participants.
