Pre-K–12 teachers and students connect contemporary arts to classroom curricula through thematic school tours, hands-on art lab activities, films, and performances. The Walker also offers resources and institutional partnerships for college and university audiences seeking a visitor experience beyond private group tours and self-guided visits. For more information, contact the Community Programs Division at 612.375.7548. The Walker’s popular guided school tours are thematic, conversational learning experiences focused on the collection, special exhibitions, the Walker’s architecture, or the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. Tours are tailored to the needs of individual groups and generally last 45 minutes to one hour. An array of tour topics and themes are offered. Download the tour topics list (PDF) for details. Feeling creative? Try an artist-led, hands-on activity in the Star Tribune Foundation Art Lab. Students roll up their sleeves and experiment with media, techniques, and concepts of contemporary art in projects linked to their gallery experience. Writing through Art tours use contemporary art as a catalyst for student writing, including descriptive writing, critical essays, stories and narratives, and poetry. Select one type of writing or schedule multiple visits to experience all four. Writing through Art school partnerships—including four museum visits, classroom activities, and parent events—can be arranged. Call 612.375.7614 for more information.
